Unit Research

Experimental and theoretical research pursued in the unit aims at understanding diverse phenomena associated with solids and condensed phases as well as liquids at a fundamental level.  Apart from fundamental research, there is also significant emphasis on research activities aimed at translational research and development of prototypes for commercialization. Some ongoing frontline research areas pursued in the Unit are as follows:

Experimental Research Areas:

· Materials electrochemistry for renewable energy generation and storage (batteries, LEDs, photovoltaics)
· Synthesis, structure, materials properties of oxides and chalcogenides of transition metals (including nanomaterials)
· Synthesis, structure, electronics properties of inorganic (including nano) and organic semiconductors
· Spectroscopic (including ultrafast) studies of various processes in inorganic/organic solid phases
· Open framework solids, heterogeneous catalysis, ceramic pigments
· Design of ion conductors and mechanism of ion transport
· Development of thin films, heterostructures: electrocatalysis, energy-efficient electronics
· Design of hybrid molecular systems and characterization; applications to magnets and switches
· Chemistry and physics of organic and inorganic materials
· X-ray crystallography, structural chemistry and charge density analysis
· Organic solid state and crystal engineering
· Development of NMR techniques and it’s applications to organic and biophysical systems

Theoretical Research Areas

· Statistical phenomena in condensed matter and biological systems
· Probing diverse interactions governing biophysical systems
· Quantum chemistry applications in the solid state
· Theory of organic non-linear optical materials, molecular magnets
· Chemical reaction dynamics
· Classical and quantum simulations
· Complex diffusion processes in the solid and liquid states
