Cold Adaptations: Role of Dynamics

Abstract:
Organisms inhabiting extremely cold environment, grow, breed and move at the same rate as their closely related species at temperate environment. These organisms overcome the challenge of operating at extremely cold temperature with the help of cold adaptation. In cold adaptation, enzymes, which catalyses otherwise slow bio-molecular reactions are portant targets for modifications. Experiments on cold adapted enzymes have revealed some remarkable properties like high substrate specificity, high catalytic activity and most importantly increased flexibility even in cold conditions. These features are in apparent contradiction with the Arrhenius equation, where rate of a reaction decreases exponentially with the decrease in temperature, and we expect significantly reduced catalytic activity and rather a rigid structure of enzymes in these conditions. In this talk, I will try to reason these unexpected attributes of cold adapted enzymes using a novel mutation strategy and suggest a model to explain the kinetic of cold adapted enzymes.
