Abstract:

Batteries will play a significant role in reaching the global target of carbon neutrality by 2050. The applications of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) into portable electronics, electric vehicles and grid power storage systems could reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This manifold consumption of lithium and its uneven distribution on the Earth have led to its price rise. Sodium possesses the similar chemical and physical properties to lithium and sodium has abundant natural resources with even geographic distribution. These properties make sodiumion batteries (SIBs) ideal substitutes for LIBs. In-spite of the various advantages, there are challenges in the commercialization of SIBs. For instance, the larger ionic size of Na, which affects the phase stability, transport properties, and interphase formation. And the higher standard electrode potential makes SIBs fall short of energy density. Thus, developing suitable cathode materials with high capacity and voltage is critical to increase the energy density of SIBs. In this seminar, I will discuss about the synthesis, structure, and electrochemical performance of low-cost mixed polyanion type cathode material Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7), which shows allclimate, air stability and is a promising cathode candidate for SIBs.
