Abstract:
Photonic crystals are the periodic electromagnetic media having periodicity with respect to dielectric constant of materials. Propagation of wave inside a photonic crystal is governed by Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory. Achieving a complete photonic band gap depends on lattice structure, symmetry, direction of propagation, polarization of light etc. 1
In my seminar I will talk about the origin of photonic band gap by applying T-matrix method for a periodic multilayer structure and its relationship with the reflectance for 1D photonic crystal of infinite as well as finite thickness.1 Then I will discuss about how to get a complete 2D band gap with respect to structural symmetry and dielectric arrangement type. I will conclude it by discussing several applications of it like photonic crystal fibre2,3, photonic crystal LASER4, super prisms, add and drop filters, gas sensor.5
