Abstract:
The field of surface wettability and reversible switching of surface wettability has developed over the past few years. Surface wettability finds applications in self-cleaning coatings, antifogging coatings, antireflection coatings etc. The study of water repellent natural surfaces such as lotus leaves and rose petals in nature encourages a biomimetic approach to design superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs). Recently these studies have progressed to addressing hydrodynamics of bouncing droplets on SHSs as well.
In my seminar I will discuss mechanisms of super hydrophobicity seen in nature and some recent bio-inspired fabrication techniques to engineer SHS. I will also discuss a few examples of SHS applications including surface charge printing and enhanced selectivity of Cu surface for CO2 reduction.
