Title: Tracking Dynamic Electrochemical Interface with Multimodal Operando EQCM-D
Date & Time: Thursday, 15th October 2026 at 4.00 p.m.
Venue: Rajarshi Bhattacharyya Memorial Lecture Hall, Chemical Sciences Building
Abstract:
Electrochemical interfaces change continuously during operation through adsorption, ion and solvent exchange, metal deposition and dissolution, and surface layer formation. Understanding these processes requires information beyond current and potential. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) uses resonance frequency changes to follow surface loading. Its extension to dissipation monitoring (EQCM-D) provides additional information about energy loss and the interaction of surface layers with the surrounding liquid.
This seminar will briefly review the development of EQCM and EQCM-D and introduce the principles of frequency, dissipation and overtone measurements. Selected case studies will then illustrate how this knowledge, together with suitable models and complementary techniques, helps us investigate different electrochemical interfaces. The main focus will be on connecting the measured signals with the physical and chemical processes taking place at the interface.
